Paolo Bonomini, winner of First Prize at the 20th International J.S. Bach Competition in Leipzig, has built an active international career as a chamber musician, soloist, and teacher. He is currently principal cello of the Camerata Salzburg.
Since his debut at the age of 15, he has performed recitals throughout Europe, South America, and Australia, and has appeared as soloist with ensembles including Camerata Bern, Sinfonie Orchester Biel, Pauliner Kammerorchester, Odessa Chamber Orchestra, and Virtuosi di Praga.
His first CD, Violoncello Italiano (Genuin Classics), received excellent reviews and was selected as “CD of the Month” by Fono Forum. He is a founding member of the string ensemble Trio Boccherini, with which he recorded the complete Beethoven string trios for Genuin Classics. He has performed in major venues such as Wigmore Hall, the Berlin Konzerthaus, the Bach-Archiv Leipzig, the Enescu Festival, and the Engadin Festival.
He has performed alongside artists including Salvatore Accardo, Bruno Giuranna, Franco Petracchi, and Giovanni Sollima. He has served as guest principal cello of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and has collaborated with the Camerata Bern and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. He has also performed with major orchestras such as the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under conductors including Claudio Abbado, Mariss Jansons, Riccardo Muti, Riccardo Chailly, John Eliot Gardiner, and Herbert Blomstedt.
He teaches advanced courses at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, is assistant to Jens Peter Maintz at the UdK Berlin, and is regularly invited as assistant to Antonio Meneses at the Hochschule der Künste Bern. He also gives masterclasses in Madrid and Zaragoza.
He has a strong interest in philological research and edited the critical edition of Tommaso Giordani’s Six Sonatas for Two Cellos.
