Pier Paolo Pasolini did not want to be only a poet, novelist, or filmmaker. He wanted his words to enter people’s homes through the radio, echo from jukeboxes, and be whistled in the streets. And he succeeded: during the 1950s and 1960s he wrote lyrics for some of the most refined composers of Italian cinema and song, creating works that still retain that rare quality of being at once literature and popular music.

L'Amore impossibile is the perfect title for a programme that journeys through Pasolini’s output as a chansonnier, guided by two artists capable of inhabiting that borderland where singer-songwriter tradition meets jazz and art music. Cristina Zavalloni is one of the most original voices on the European scene: impossible to classify by definition, equally at ease in Luciano Berio and Antônio Carlos Jobim, she brings to every performance an understanding of the text that is, above all, literary.

Roman pianist Enrico Zanisi, with his solid jazz background, creates harmonic landscapes in which the melodies of Fiorenzo Carpi, Domenico Modugno, Piero Piccioni, Piero Umiliani, and the Greek composers Manos Hadjidakis and Stavros Xarchakos rediscover an unexpected youthfulness.
