Gabriele Carcano is an Italian pianist whose musical intelligence and communicative ability have established him as one of the most significant Italian musicians of his generation. Winner of the 2010 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, he is active as a recitalist, soloist with orchestra, and chamber musician.
After his debut at the Herkulessaal in Munich, where the Süddeutsche Zeitung described him as “a sculptor of sound, an aesthete,” he received numerous awards, including the Premio Casella at the Premio Venezia competition, where he debuted at Teatro La Fenice. He has performed in major venues such as Tonhalle Zürich, Salle Pleyel in Paris, Konzerthaus Berlin, Wigmore Hall in London, KKL Lucerne, the Scherzo Series in Madrid, Società del Quartetto di Milano, Teatro Mariinsky in St. Petersburg, Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, as well as in the United States, Hong Kong, Tel Aviv, and Tokyo.
He has appeared at major festivals including the Mariinsky International Piano Festival, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, Festival Radio France Montpellier, Rheingau Musik Festival, Piano aux Jacobins in Toulouse, and the Festival Pau Casals.
As a soloist, he has performed with orchestras such as the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano “Giuseppe Verdi,” Orchestre National de Montpellier, Orchestra da Camera di Mantova, Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, Staatskapelle Weimar, Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen, Orchestra del Teatro Petruzzelli, and Teatro Comunale di Bologna, under conductors including Ton Koopman, Alain Altinoglu, Lawrence Foster, Ion Marin, Claus Peter Flor, Maxim Emelyanychev, Daniel Oren, and Clemens Schuldt.
A devoted chamber musician, he regularly collaborates with artists such as Carolin Widmann, Stephen Waarts, Lorenza Borrani, the Hermes Quartet, Eckart Runge, Viviane Hagner, Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, Enrico Dindo, and bass-baritone Hanno Müller-Brachmann. Invited by Mitsuko Uchida, he has participated four times in the Marlboro Festival and toured with Musicians from Marlboro, performing at Carnegie Hall, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, and in major North American cities.
In the coming season he will perform the complete Beethoven violin and piano sonatas with Carolin Widmann and appear at venues such as the Alte Oper Frankfurt and the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin. In 2026 he has been appointed professor of piano at the Mozarteum University Salzburg.
His recordings include early works by Brahms (Oehms Classics), a Schumann solo album, and a duo recording with Stephen Waarts (Rubicon Classics), all widely praised by international critics. He is also a Steinway Artist.
