In the splendid setting of the Teatro Bibiena, the renowned pianist Gabriele Carcano — a long-standing guest of Trame Sonore — appears at the festival for the first time alongside German bass-baritone Hanno Müller-Brachmann. Together, the two artists present Schubert’s posthumous collection Schwanengesang (“Swan Song”), which gathers the composer’s final lieder written in 1828.
Not conceived as a unified cycle but as a set of late masterpieces set to selected poems by Ludwig Rellstab, Heinrich Heine, and Johann Gabriel Seidl, the work ranges from the famous and tender Ständchen to the dark, almost expressionistic atmosphere of the visionary Der Doppelgänger.
Moving beyond the boundaries of Classicism, the piano becomes the creator of bold and modern harmonies, rather than a mere accompanying instrument. The evocative title recalls the legend of the swan’s final song, paying tribute to the genius of a composer who, even in the face of death, managed to transform the course of Western music forever.
