Nicolas Altstaedt is one of Europe’s most sought-after and versatile musicians. As a soloist, conductor, and artistic director, he masters a repertoire ranging from early music to contemporary works.
He has appeared as a guest artist with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, European Union Youth Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy, Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
As a conductor, he regularly collaborates with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, SWR Symphonieorchester, and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.
Winner of the Credit Suisse Young Artist Award, he has performed throughout the world with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Wiener Symphoniker, Czech Philharmonic, BBC orchestras, the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, under conductors including Roger Norrington, François-Xavier Roth, Andrew Davis, Neville Marriner, and Vladimir Ashkenazy.
He is artistic director of the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival and the Haydn Philharmonie.
As a chamber musician, his collaborators include Janine Jansen, Vilde Frang, Tabea Zimmermann, Lawrence Power, Antoine Tamestit, Martin Fröst, Alexander Lonquich, Jonathan Cohen, Jean Rondeau, and the Quatuor Ébène.
He has performed and collaborated with composers such as Thomas Adès, Jörg Widmann, Wolfgang Rihm, Thomas Larcher, and Sofia Gubaidulina, and has recently commissioned works from Anders Hillborg, Helena Winkelman, and Fazıl Say.
