In the Basilica of Santa Barbara, sacred music returns to its original setting through a program that leads the listener into the heart of seventeenth-century Germany. Performing it is the Vox Musica Vocal & Instrumental Ensemble, conducted by Michael Berman, an ensemble recognized internationally within the field of Baroque music.
Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri emerges as an intense and intimate cycle of cantatas, a meditation on the crucified Christ entrusted to a restrained yet deeply expressive musical language. Its spirituality, inward and never rhetorical, enters into an ideal dialogue with the works of Heinrich Schütz, a foundational figure of German sacred music and a model for Buxtehude himself. In both composers, faith and music become inseparable, and every musical gesture is transformed into both prayer and artistic form.
Heard today within the intimate acoustics of Santa Barbara, and interpreted by an ensemble closely connected to Trame Sonore, these works restore a sense of suspended time, in which the past does not recede but continues to resonate in the present.
