Graduated with top marks from the Conservatory of Turin under the guidance of Enzo Ferraris, he later refined his studies with Ludwig Streicher at the Musikhochschule in Vienna.
In the role of principal double bass, he has collaborated with numerous orchestras, including the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia Orchestra, the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Orchestra Mozart, the Fondazione Arena di Verona Orchestra, the Teatro Regio Orchestra of Turin, and the I Pomeriggi Musicali, performing under conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel, Daniel Harding, Pierre Boulez, and Daniele Gatti.
He has taken part in numerous concerts for major festivals and institutions, performing in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls. In 2006, Claudio Abbado invited him to join the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, with which he has performed in Lucerne and on tour in London, New York, Vienna, Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul, Tokyo, Paris, Madrid, Baden-Baden, Dortmund, Luxembourg, Moscow, Hamburg, and Ferrara, also recording numerous DVDs. Since 2016, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra has been conducted by Riccardo Chailly.
Highly active as a chamber musician, he has performed with soloists from the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, principal players of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, La Scala Theatre Orchestra, and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and has collaborated with artists such as Boris Belkin, Kyoko Yonemoto, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Bruno Canino, Raphael Wallfisch, Wies de Boevé, and Enrico Dindo.
He is professor of double bass at the State Conservatory of Music in Turin.
Paolo will participate in Trame Sonore 2026 as a soloist and as a member of the Orchestra da Camera di Mantova.
