Sergey Malov plays violin, viola, baroque violin, and the violoncello da spalla, an instrument on which Johann Sebastian Bach himself is believed to have played his cello suites.

As a violinist, he has won prizes at the Paganini Competition in Genoa, the Mozart Competition in Salzburg, the Heifetz Competition in Vilnius, and the Michael Hill Competition in Auckland. As a violist, he has won prizes at the ARD Competition in Munich and the Tokyo Viola Competition.

As a violin and viola soloist, he has performed with orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the Venice Baroque Orchestra, the Seville Baroque Orchestra, the Musica Viva Moscow Orchestra, the Camerata Salzburg, and the Baroque Orchestra Halle. In September 2017 he was appointed professor at the Zurich University of the Arts.

He has recorded for DECCA, EASonus, Hänssler Profil, Alba, and Pan Classics. In spring 2019 he released his album Paganini, featuring his recordings of the 24 Caprices. Videos featuring his violoncello da spalla have been viewed over one million times online. In addition to Bach’s six cello suites, he performs a wide repertoire of solo and chamber music on this instrument.
