Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791)
Quintetto per archi n. 4 in sol minore, K. 516

In the Sala degli Antenati of Palazzo d’Arco, one of the most fascinating and historically rich spaces in Mantua, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s String Quintet No. 4 in G minor, K. 516 resonates. Composed in 1787, the same year as Don Giovanni, this quintet is among the most intense and personal chamber works in the entire Mozart catalogue.

The key of G minor, which for the composer is almost always associated with a deep and melancholic restlessness, permeates the work with an emotional tension that is never fully resolved, even in moments of apparent lightness. The five string players, historic members of the Orchestra da Camera di Mantova, engage in a dense and tightly woven dialogue in which no voice prevails over the others: this is chamber music in its most authentic sense, built on mutual listening and a delicate, fragile balance.

A jewel that the intimate and enclosed atmosphere of the Sala degli Antenati seems to naturally enhance.
